Most dating apps match you based on photos, proximity, and a handful of preferences. Intently starts somewhere different: what you actually want. Your dating intention—the relationship goal you set when you create your profile—is the foundation of every match you'll see. Here's how the system works and why it leads to better connections.
Intent Zones: The Foundation
When you sign up for Intently, the first thing you do is choose your primary intention. We call these Intent Zones, and there are seven of them:
| Intent Zone | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Casual | Hookups and no-strings-attached connections |
| Dating | Short-term dating, exploring what's out there |
| Serious | Focused on finding a long-term relationship |
| Marriage | Marriage-minded, ready to commit |
| Sugar | Sugar dating arrangements |
| Travel | Travel companions and adventure partners |
| Lifestyle | ENM, poly, and kink-friendly connections |
You also set a relationship style (monogamous, polyamorous, open, or ENM), a timeline (ready now, exploring, 1–2 years), and optional deal breakers. These aren't buried in settings—they're part of your profile and visible to everyone who sees you.
💡 Why This Matters
On traditional apps, you don't know if someone wants a relationship or just a weekend. On Intently, you know before you swipe. That one piece of transparency eliminates the most common source of wasted time in online dating.
How Your Discover Feed Is Built
Your Discover feed isn't random. Every profile you see has been filtered through multiple layers:
- Exclusions first — People you've already liked, passed on, blocked, or matched with are removed. You'll never see the same profile twice.
- Preference filters — Your age range, distance, and gender preferences narrow the pool. Free users get these basics; Premium and Elite users unlock height, body type, ethnicity, education, income, and lifestyle filters.
- Intent alignment — If you enable "Intent Match Only," you'll exclusively see people who share your primary intention. A person set to Serious will only see other people set to Serious.
- Priority ordering — Profiles with active boosts appear first, followed by Elite members, then Premium, then Free. Within each tier, the most recently active users surface first.
The result is a feed where every profile is someone who passes your filters, shares your goals (if you've opted in), and is actively using the app.
Intent Match Only: The Precision Filter
This is the feature that makes Intently fundamentally different. When you turn on Intent Match Only, your Discover feed only shows people who chose the same primary intention as you.
✅ With Intent Match Only ON
You chose "Serious." You only see people who also chose "Serious." No one looking for casual. No one still figuring it out. Every person in your feed has the same relationship goal you do.
You can also browse by specific Intent Zones using the intent filter. Curious what the Casual feed looks like? You can explore it without changing your own intention. This gives you flexibility while keeping your default feed precisely tuned to what you actually want.
Matching: It Takes Two
On Intently, a match only happens when both people like each other. There's no cold messaging, no unsolicited DMs. You swipe right to like, left to pass, or up to Super Like (Premium feature). When the interest is mutual, a match is created and messaging opens.
Swipe Right
Like a profile. They won't know unless they like you back.
Super Like
Show extra interest. The other person is notified immediately.
Undo Swipe
Accidentally passed? Undo your last swipe within 5 minutes.
See Who Likes You
Premium: see full profiles. Free: see blurred previews.
Free users get 5 likes per day—enough to be thoughtful about who you're choosing. Premium and Elite users get unlimited likes, plus access to Super Likes and the Undo feature.
Advanced Filters by Tier
Not all filters are available to all users. This is by design—basic preferences are free, while more specific criteria are part of the premium experience:
Free
Age range, distance (up to 500 km), gender preference, Intent Match Only, verified-only filter.
Premium ($14.99/mo)
Everything in Free, plus: height range, body type, ethnicity preferences, unlimited likes, undo swipe, Super Like, and see who likes you.
Elite ($29.99/mo)
Everything in Premium, plus: education minimum, income minimum, lifestyle tags (must-have and must-not-have), priority placement in others' feeds, and weekly profile boosts.
Why Intent-First Matching Works
Traditional matching algorithms optimize for engagement—they want you to keep swiping, keep opening the app, keep buying boosts. Intently's system optimizes for alignment. When two people match, they already know:
- What the other person is looking for (Casual, Serious, Marriage, etc.)
- Their relationship style (monogamous, open, poly)
- Their timeline (ready now, exploring, 1–2 years)
- Their deal breakers
That's not information you have to extract over three dates. It's on the profile. The awkward "so what are you looking for?" conversation that usually happens weeks in? On Intently, it happened before the first swipe.
The Result
Less wasted time. Fewer mismatched expectations. More first dates that actually go somewhere. When both people want the same thing, the conversation starts from common ground instead of uncertainty.
Profile Prompts: Beyond the Bio
Intentions tell you what someone wants. Profile prompts tell you who they are. Instead of a generic bio field, Intently asks specific questions that encourage thoughtful, revealing answers. The prompts help you show personality, values, and interests in ways that a 150-character bio never could.
When your Discover feed combines intent alignment with genuine profile content, you're making decisions based on compatibility—not just attraction. That's what makes matching on Intently feel different from the first swipe.
