Who Viewed You: What Opening a Profile Leaves Behind, and Who Gets to See It

“Will they know I looked?” Almost everyone asks it about a dating app, usually a second after opening a profile. On Intently it has an exact answer, because the app keeps a record of profile visits and shows it to exactly one person. The answer comes in three parts: what counts as looking, what is kept, and who can ever see it. Each is below, followed by the consequences people actually want spelled out.

What Counts as Looking

Opening someone's full profile. Not seeing their card.

These record a visit

These do not

The line is drawn on purpose. The Discover feed never touches the visit record at all, and the app records a visit only when it opens a full profile because you asked to see it. A refresh the app does for its own reasons, like filling in a celebration screen or returning you to where you were, is not you looking, so it does not count as a visit.

What Is Kept

One line per pair of people: who opened whose profile, when the most recent visit was, and how many visits there have been. Open the same profile again and that line's time moves forward and its count goes up by one.

That is the whole record. There is no diary of every visit with its own time, and nothing about how long you stayed, which photos you opened or what you read.

Who Can Ever See It

Among members, only the person whose profile you opened, only on the Elite plan, and only on a screen they choose to open. It sits behind a row called Who viewed you on their Profile tab, and the screen it opens is headed with a line that is simply true: “Only you can see this list.”

Each row on that list is a name, a first photo, a Verified badge if that person has verified their identity, when they last opened the profile, and a number of visits when it was more than one. Newest first, the 50 most recent. On the other plans the same row on the Profile tab reads “Elite feature” and opens a lock with a See plans button, and that lock is not just the page hiding a list: the server refuses to send the list to anyone below Elite.

Never pushed

Nothing announces a visit. No notification, no email and no badge count reads the record, and there is no weekly “people viewed your profile” message. It is there for someone who goes to look, and for nobody else. Our piece on notifications explains why that kind of number is one we will not push at you.

The record turns up in two more places, and both are yours. Your data export lists the profiles you opened, and the visits your own profile received with their times and counts, but not who made them. And the privacy policy describes the record in the same terms as this article.

What That Means in Practice

Pausing does not make looking invisible

Pause mode takes your profile out of everyone's Discover and empties your own feed. The visit record does not check whether you are paused, though. Open a match's profile while you are paused and that visit is kept like any other.

A visit outlasts today's plan

Visits are recorded whatever plan either of you is on, and the list has no date limit. So if someone moves to Elite next month, a visit you paid them this week is on their list, as long as you are among their 50 most recent visitors.

A block takes you off each other's lists

While either of you has the other blocked, neither of you appears on the other's list. A blocked pair cannot open each other's profiles in the first place, so a block also stops any new visits. What a block does covers the rest of it.

Deleting an account takes the record with it, both ways

Every visit you made and every visit your profile received are deleted with your account. A closed account also drops off everyone's lists.

Questions People Ask

Is there a setting that hides my visits? No. The only way a look goes unrecorded is the list at the top of this page: read the card instead of opening the profile. Once the full profile is open, the visit is kept.

Does checking my own list tell anyone? Opening your Who viewed you list records nothing. Tapping a name on it does, because that opens the other person's full profile, and that is a visit to them like any other. If they are on Elite, you will be on their list too.

Do visits expire? No. The line for a pair stays until one of the two accounts is deleted. It is hidden while a block stands, or if the visitor's account is closed, but it is not removed. What changes is the view: the list shows the 50 most recent visitors, so an old visit can fall off the bottom of a busy list without being deleted.

What does a visit tell me about someone who looked at me? That they opened your full profile, when they last did, and how many times. It cannot tell you why. People open a profile to decide, to check a detail before replying, or because they tapped a card while scrolling. Read it as attention, not as a message.

Opening a Profile Is a Signal

The lesson here is small and worth having. Opening a full profile is a signal, like a like, only quieter: it tells one person, if they are on Elite and go looking, that you looked and how often. That is not a reason to look less. It is a reason to know when you are sending one. A Discover card tells you plenty and records nothing; the full profile is where looking starts to count.

What this is not

Not an upgrade pitch. Who viewed you is one of the Elite features, and what each of them does is in Every Feature Worth Upgrading For. This piece is only the straight answer to the question in the title, for whichever side of the list you are on.
